Google IO was way better than I expected. I never attended before, and in general I don't like conferences because they're mostly boring. This one was different. The talks were mostly very good and information rich.
I particularly liked the first keynote by Google VP of engineering Vic Gundrota who talked about what Google is currently working on. His main point was html5: he had some demos of cool html5 stuff that Google is creating. What I personally found the cooles thing is the following.
I have been telling people for ten years now that the web would go 3D within 10 years. And now it turns out that the web just made that: html has a <canvas> tag that allows you to create 3D graphics on the screen. Live, without reload, like ajax. I'm sure the performance of the demo was better than what you'd currently get on an ordinary dsl line, but still. It was awsome. This is Vics keynote, watch 9:00 in particular:
Keep in mind that this 3D demo is a web page.
Also, during Vic's keynote he announced the second part of the Android Developer Challenge. Submission of apps is in August, and you can win up to $250k. You can judge the apps on the google web site, mid November prize winners are announced. I will definitely take part, with a new app that I've been thinking about for a while, and this is a good opportunity to really start working on it.
