Before WW2, Marlene Dietrich stayed in Amsterdam for some time before leaving for the US. She stayed in the hotel of the van Venetie family near the concert hall. The painter Eduard de Froe, a friend of the Van Venetie family, regularly made portraits of hotel guests. He also painted Marlene Dietrich. The painting is part of a De Froe collection that as far as I know, contains a substantial part of De Froes work.
