This is weird. You look at the pics of Jupiter one of last year, one of May 9th, and you see that the south belt has gone. This happened after the superior conjuction that recently happend - Jupiter passed behind the sun, as seen from Earth. The article doesn't say what happened with the big red spot, that was part of the south belt as you can see in the left picture.
